Both these shows from Aspen (3/20 and 3/21) are amazing. This show has to be a favorite of mine just as far as setlists go - there are only a couple tracks on here I am not so fond of - and even then all the music is well played.
Owsley once said that this X Factor happens when you get a terminal velocity of enough people on the right psychedelics at the right time. While I don't think psychedelics need be in present en masse to bring about the X Factor, it is true that the crowd needs to be of a certain disposition for the band to reach that height (indeed, the X Factor is not just the musicians on stage, it's the crowd too..everybody's playin in the heart of gold band..). Having attended this show, I really felt the chatty drinking crowd prevented that total cosmic flight. So this show gets 5 stars instead of 6. Definitely worth being in your constant music rotation.
A standout Elko. During Spring Heeled Jack I remember thinking, "Damn, this is just the first set??"
Mission Man stands out in the second set, as does Birds of America, a nice Black Elk Speaks (a song that did not initially impress me). Way of the Buffalo is a nice treat - it was brought back on 1/1/11 after a three years off, and was played a couple other times in 2011 before this show (and has only been played 3 times since).
Acadian Driftwood closes the show really nicely - this was the first Driftwood in 4 months. We heard it soundchecked before the Copper Mtn show the night before, along with Moonshiner. It was great to hear Driftwood, but we didn't get a Moonshiner...it was played 3/5/11, but other than that hasn't been played since Grubb's last show, 12/31/09. Hoped it would come up this weekend, but there was enough music to get down tonight anyway- Make sure to check out the next night's show too!
Both available recordings of this show are very nice quality.

This entire show is amazing. I love this band and how they've really kicked it into high gear this year. Besides S-H J, I'm really pleased with the encore choice. Can't wait to see these guys again!
